Belle Gunness “The Black Widow” Continues…

Gunness’ hired hand, on-and-off lover, Ray Lamphere was convicted of arson in November of 1908, in connection with the fire at Gunness’ farm. Lamphere later confessed that Gunness had indeed placed advertisements in the papers only to murder and rob the men who responded and visited her farm.

In Lamphere’s confession, he stated that Gunness had asked him to burn down her farmhouse along with her children while they were still inside the farmhouse. He stated that in order to mislead the investigators, the body that was thought to be Gunness was actually a murder victim and that it had intentionally been placed there.

Lamphere explained that because of an impending visit from a brother of one of the victims arriving early, she was motivated to destroy the house, fake her death, and flee. At the time of Lamphere’s arrest he was wearing John Moe’s overcoat and Henry Gurholt’s watch.

In a speculative second Lamphere confession, given to a Reverend Schell, and eventually to Edward Bechly, Lampheres states that he had killed Gunness and her children with an ax, and then sprinkled the bodies with kerosene and set fire to them and the house. His confession gave details about the slaying and his part in the murders that had occurred at the Gunness farm. Lamphere’s task usually being that of burying the bodies in the garden. The primary fact in his confession was that Gunness was not a fugitive or alive.

Lamphere’s confession resulted in the arrest in his accomplice,Elizabeth Smith. There were inconsistencies between Lamphere’s confession and Smith’s confession, including whether or not Belle Gunness survived. These issues remain a historical issue and are not fully resolved.

Sightings of Gunness in the Chicago area continued long after she was “declared dead”. The sheriff blamed a Chicago American reporter for inventing the “escaped” story. After the crimes Gunness committed at the farm came to light, the farm became a tourist attraction.

DNA was tested in 2008 on the headless corpse against a sample letter Gunness sent to one of her victims. Due to the age of the sample of the letter, it was unable to be properly tested.

Spectators have come across the country to see the mass graves. Concessions and souvenirs were sold. The La Porte county Historical Society Museum has a permanent “Belle Gunness” exhibit.

Elizabeth Hurley stars in a 2004 film, Method, as Rebecca portraying Gunness in a film, within a film, shot in Romania.

A 2021 film starring Traci Lords, The Farm, is based on the Gunness story.

A 2021 novel by Camilla Bruce, In the Garden of Spite: A Novel of the Black Widow of Laporte, has elements of “Norwegian noir and true crime” and is based on the life of Belle Gunness.

Thank you for traveling into the past for an intriguing tale of the life of Belle Guiness.

The Hollow Tree

An excursion to look for bird nests, as is typical for young boys to do, four young boys find more than they bargained for while, on land illegally, in Hagley Wood, part of Hagley Estate belonging to Lord Cobhand, near Wynchburly Hill, they discover a human skull.

April 18, 1943 Bob Farmer, thinking he had found a particulary good place to search for birds’ nest, attempts to climb a tree to investigate. Glancing down the hollow trunk he discovers a skull. At first glance he believed it to be that of an animal, instead realizing it was human hair and teeth. Knowing that he and three of his friends were on the land illegaly, Farmer places the skull back into the hollow tree and he and his friends leave without mentioning the discovery to anyone, or so they thought.

The youngest of the four boys, Thomas Willets, felt uneasy about their discovery and decided to tell his parents. Willets parents notified the police. Upon investigation, the police found an almost complete skeleton, a shoe, a gold wedding ring, and fragments of clothing inside the trunk of the tree.

This skull proved to be valuable evidence for the investigators, having still had tufts of hair and a clear dental pattern (minus a few teeth)…after further looking, the remains of a hand were found some distance from the tree.

After sending the body for forensic examiation by James Webster, it was determined the remains belonged to a female. A piece of taffeta was discovered in her mouth, suggesting suffocation. The body had to have been deceased for at least 18 months, having presumably been placed inside the trunk while her body was still warm, as it could not have fit once rigor mortis had taken hold.

During WWII, with so many people havin been reported missing, the records were too numerous for a proper identification to be made, despite cross-referencing details of missing persons throughout the region and contacting dentists from all over the country, with the woman’s dentistry being so distinctive.

Providing investigators with several new leads for tracing the identity, a graffiti message appeared on a wall in Upper Dean Street, Birmingham.

Who put Bella down the Wych Elm-Hagley Wood

Sporadically appearing on the Hagley Obelisk, near where the woman’s body had been discovered, since the 1970’s, similar graffitti, although slightly modified has been written:

Who put Bella in the Witch Elm?

On a radio program that was first broadcast in 2014, Steve Punt suggests two possible victims.

Theory One: In 1944, a woman was reported missing by a Birmingham sex worker. She stated that another sex worker called “Bella”, who worked on Hagley Road, disappeared three years prior. This suggested the graffiti writer was probably aware of this woman’s identity. (Bella also known as Luebella)

Theory two: In 1953, a woman named Una Mossop, made a statement to police that her husband (Jack Mossop), confessed to family members that he and a Dutchman (Van Ralt) had put Bella down the tree.

Mossop stated that he and Ralt had met for a drink at the Lyttelton Arms. Mossop said that later that night a woman had become drunk and passed out while they were driving. Mossop and Ralt placed her inside a hollow tree in the woods hoping that when she woke the next morning, being frightened, she would see the error of her ways.

Mossop had been confined to a mental hospital, suffering from recurring dreams of a woman staring out at him from a tree. Mossop died died in the hospital before the womans’ body had been found in the hollow tree. Una Mossop did not come forward with this information for more than ten years after her husbands death, leaving the likelihood of this confession questionable.

Several theories have surfaced. One from a M15 declassified file about Josef Jakobs, who was the last man to have been put to death in the Tower of London, August 15, 1941. There were several descrepancies about who he believed the woman could be, and in September of 2016 it was determined the woman he believed it to be had died in Berlin on December 16, 1942.

Another of these theories coming from Margaret Murray, an anthropologist and archaeologist. She proposed Witchcraft as a possibility due to the severing of one hand, consistent with a ritual called Hand of Glory. Her theory excited the press and investigators considered another murder of a man, seemingly ritualistic in nature, Charles Walton, in nearby Lower Quinton.

The theory of a Dutchwoman named Clarabella Dronkers, surfaced in 1953. It was said that she was killed by a German spy-ring, which consisted of a British officer, a Dutchman and a music hall artist, for “knowing too much”. There are no available records or evidence to support this theory either.

Many still wonder of the true identity of this woman and for years there have been many blog posts and news articles done to try and uncover “Bella’s” true identity and what happened to her. I believed this to be a very compelling story in nature, as a writer.

Theories and possibilities are ever endless in the world of unsolved cases.

BELLE

Voices of the Past would like to bring to you one of the most bizzare unsolved cases of our past.

An active serial killer, between 1884 and 1908, involved at least 14 muders of men who were enticed into a rural home in Indianal, with the promise of marriage. Some believe it is possible that there are as many as 40 murders.

This story is not for the weak stomached individuals!

Belle Gunnes, born Bryhild Paulsdatler Storseth, (Nickname “Hell’s Belle), SUPPOSEDLY died in a house fire in 1908, but popular belief is that she faked her death. She was the youngest of eight children, born November 11, 1859, in Selbu, Norway.

She began working for neighboring farms by milking cows and herding then at age 14 to save money for passage to New York. She moved to the US in 1881. After being processed by immigration at Castle Garden, she changed her name to Belle.

Belle traveled to Chicago to join her sister Nellie who had immigrated several years earlier. Until her first marriage in 1884, she worked as a domestic servant and at a butchers shop cutting up animal carcasses while living with her sister and brother-in-law.

After marrying Mads Sorenson in 1884, Belle and her husband owned a candy store which burned to the ground as well as their home. Both insurance policies were granted payout to the couple.

Insuring two children that lived in their home at the time, the babies died from inflammation of the large intestine, which can result from poisoning. Large insurance checks were granted to Belle and her husband for both children. Having never appeared to be pregnant, rumors circulated by neighbors about the children.

Belle’s husband purchased two life insurance policies. Both were active at the same time. On July 30, 1890, both of these policies were active, only one would expire on that day, while the other would begin. Belle’s husband died that very day of cerebral hemorrhage.

Belle had explained that her husband had come home with a headache. She provided him with quinine powder for the pain. Later she claimed to have checked on him only to find him dead. Belle collected money from both of the insurance policies, being given a total of $5,000, with that money she moved to La Porte, Indiana and bought a pig farm.

A week after marrying Peter Gunness on April 1, 1902, while her husband was out of the house, his infant daughter, left in Belle’s care, died of unknown causes. Peter Gunness died 8 month later due to a skill fracture. Belle explained that her husband had reached for something on a high shelf and a meat griner fell on him, smashing his skull.

After suspecting murder, a district coroner convened a coroner’s jury. Finding nothing, Belle collected $3,000 in insurance money.

Belle placed marriage ads in Chicago newspapers in 1905. Henry Gurholt, a Wisconsin farmhand, answered her ad. After heeeeer traveled to La Porte, Gurhold wroe to his family. He stated he was in good health, he liked the farm, and then requested that they send him seed potatoes. When his family didn’t hear from him after that, they contacted Belle. She told them that he had gone off with some horse traders to Chicagooooo. She kept his trunk and his fur overcoat.

In 1906, a man named Joe Moe also answered Bell’s ad. They had crresponded for several months. He travelled to La Porte and withdrew a large amount of money. MOe was never seen again after that, although a carpenter who occasionally worked for Belle, observed that Moe’s trunk ws still in Belle’s home along with more than a dozen other trunks.

If you are faint of heart or weak stomached, don’t read any further. If your curious, the story gets pretty gory from here.

In April of 1908, when Bell’s farmhouse burned to the ground, her criminal activity finally came to light. Authorities found the bodies of a headless adult women, believed to be Belle, along with her three children.

Eleven additional people were found on the property following further investigation of the ruins.

After this, La Porte police authorities were contacted by Asle Helgelien. Helgelien found correspondence between his brother Andrew Helgelien an Belle. In these letters were petitions for Andrew to relocate to La Porte and bring money. Andrew was told to keep his move a secret.

After Asle Helgelien visited th farm with a former hired hand, attention was paid to “soft depressions” made into a penfor hogs. A gunny sak, that contained two hands, two feet, and one head, Asle believed to be his brother, was discovered, after digging one of these impressions in the lot.

Inspections and further digging of dozens of these “slumped depressions” in Belles’s yard uncovered multiple burlap sack that contained torsos and hands, and arms that had been hacked from the shoulders down. In each of these cases the body had been butchered the same way.

Five bodies were found the first day, an additional six on the second day. Some of thesewere in shallow graves under the hog pen, others were near an outhouse or lake. The police eventually stopped counting the bodies found.

The descriptions of a praise worthy Belle, who died in a fire along with her three children, was reassessed. Most of the remains found at the Belle farm could not be identified even after families were invited to identify, some of the men that had gone missing.

If you found this story intriguing, the story will continue in a late post.

BLACK SHEEP

I saw a snippett of Gayle Kings’ interview with Will Smith (which will air Sunday), and it truly hit home for me. Will Smith said, “Whatever it is that you are going through, or have gone through, was perfectly designed for you.” He states that life is the curicullum to teach you. He used his life lessons and what he had gone through at an early age to shape him into who he was going to be and who he is today.

I took a sip of my coffee and thought long and hard about that statement. It was as if a lightbulb had gone off, and I realized what his words represented for me.

I experienced, at a very young age, things no child should every have to experience, and as Smith stated, that was my lesson, life is my curicullum. I allowed these experiences shape my teenage years as well as my 20’s and 30’s. Through more trauma, of a different kind of nature, it shaped a period in my life where I was determined to give up on these life lessons and throw in the towel completely.

It was only through closing many, many doors and letting the negative people in my life go, that I actually began to see who it was that I was truly meant to be. I am very proud of myself for where I am today and the mother and grandmother I am.

Trust me, just that one step of illiminating peole, and figuring out that I didn’t and don’t need them in my life was a journey that broke my heart into so many pieces. I went through an apology phase, when in all actuality should have been the other way around.

I am picking up one piece of my heart at a time, still today, and although I have always been considered talented, I am seeing colors I haven’t noticed before. Ideas are shaping, doors are opening up, and a creative ability is shining taking me to the next level.

I look in the mirror now, not ashamed of who I am, what I have been through, or that I am considered “The Black Sheep”. I only need to accept myself. Of coarse, I could have gone further if this realization had come to me earlier, but it’s never too late as the saying goes.

I do wish things could have been different and relationships didn’t have to be dissolved. To have the only thing I ever wanted (acceptance), and to be pushed to be more than I was, intested of falling in line and being just another one of the gang; to be told, “It’s going to be okay. WE are going to get through this and I will always be there for you.”

To be called, “THE BLACK SHEEP” doesn’t seem quite appropriate at this point in my life. I like to consider the term, “THE BRIGHT AND SHINING SHEEP”.

My advice: It may take a while, a long while, to figur out who you are and who you are meant to be. You may have to let people go to get where you are going. Sometimes, you have to let something go to get something.

There IS greener grass on the other side for some of us. Remember, there was a reason we were put where we were in that time of our lives. To overcome, to achieve, to defy the odds, to inspire, or just let others know, YOU CAN RISE ABOVE IT ALL!

Let who you are and your life’s experiences drive you to unimaginable feats!

PYRAMIDS ?

Hey guys and gals! Welcome back to Voices of the Future!

When we look at businesses as a whole, every one of them runs as if it were a pyramid. Consider the pecking order in which the money is made, no matter what type of business it is.

You have your boss, The Head Honcho, who either owns the business or runs the show, and next comes you and I; we are on the next tier. We run the day to day business operations to make The Head Honcho his bucks, so he can pay us our bucks. Below us is the next tier who help us, and without them doing their part it makes it harder for us.

Now in order for your boss to have this business, he had to have invested somewhere, be it property, finances, etc. to get started and then in turn hire us.

What I am trying to do is decide whether to invest in a company that one of my children has invested in. In order for me to do that, of coarse, I have to find out if I will make any money.

Calm down! I’m not asking you to invest, all I am asking is for you to take a look at some products, try them out through my daughters link I will provide you, and then let me know if you like them and if you would purchase it again.

This process is no different than the one Avon uses or Mary Kay, and I know there are those of you out there who either sell these products or use them.

If you would like to purchase a product just let me know, I can make that happen for you. On a serious note, everything is trial and error. For the housewife, there are many cleaning products that others swear by and refuse to use anything else. There are also vitamins, and Yes, Olympic Athletes are using these (including my husband). There are beauty products that I am using.

But, like any other person, I am looking to make money and I can’t do that without YOU! And, if you like the products and think you can sell them as well, I’m sure we can help you make money as well!

COINCIDENCES

Voices, past, present, and furture would like to bring to you a story of sheer coincidence.

A few days ago, my daughter and her children visited me and upon reminiscing about the good ol’ days, she reminded me of strange lights that her and I would sit and watch from my front porch. These lights seemed to dance in unison with one another, never staying still, yet being too close to one another to be any sort of aircraft. Of coarse, my daughter and I found this to be unusually strange. Every night these lights appear in the same place in the sky, (yes, still to this day) and they get bright and move around, appearing as if they would hit eachother. One light would go one way and then the other would shoot off in the opposite direction. Why or what this is, I couldn’t tell you; but I went out onto the porch that night just to see, and there it was, same as it was then.

I bring to you what are called Marfa Lights; also known as Ghost lights. These lights appear in Texas, in the US and have gained alot of fame as to what they exactly are. You have your scientists who went there, camped out with their equipment and in unison, claim it is the lights from cars, campfires, or atmospheric reflexions. Others like the Native Americans like to believe it is the spirits of ancestors.

There are many names for these lights; one being “will-o’-the-wisp”. On-lookers have attributed these lights to paranormal phenomenon such as, ghosts and UFO’s.

James Burnell states “You may just see mysterious orbs of light suddenly apper above desert foliage. These balls of light may remain stationary, as they pulse on and off with intensity, varying from dim to almost a blinding brilliance.” Now, this is exactly what is occuring here but without the lights becoming that bright. He continues, “These ghostly lights may dart across the desert or perform splits and merges. Light colors are usually yellow-orange but other hues include blue, green and red. They fly above the desert vegetation but below background meses.”

The first historical record of these lights was in the 1800’s (before there were automobiles) by a young cowhand, Robert Reed Ellison. He claimed to have seen a flickering light while driving cattle throught Paisono Pass. There were other settlers who had told him that they too, had often seen the lights, but after investigation they found no ashes or other evidence of a campsite. A couple, Joe and Anne Humphreys, had next repoted seeing these lights, again in the 1880’s, only a couple years after the first.

Brian Dunning explains these lights as a mirage caused by sharp temperature gradients between cold and warm layers of air. Some believe these lights are an optical illusion known as “heat-haze” or “heat shimmer”, and when the weather is cold it is known as “superior mirages”.

In 2009, David Morrell’s book “The shimmer” was inspired by these lights. The Rolling Stones mentions the “Lights of Marfa” in the song “No Spare Parts”. In his 2016 album, “My Gospel”, Paul Cauthen wrote “Marfa Lights”.

These lights are considered evasive and mysterious, popping up in random places in the dark of nights with few witnesses. I like to think something similar is happening here, by sheer coincidence maybe, but in Texas, US these lights are easily spotted from the same location nearly every night.

If you are ever sitting around at night, looking into the sky, maybe, just maybe you may see something similar too.

ELIXER

I looked at an interesting writing prompt this morning that I thought would be great practice for me and anyone, for that matter, who is just starting their writing venture.

Write about two wrongs a hero must right in their world.

If we use “The Hero’s Journey” term, we can try out what is known as “The Return with the Elixer”, to incorporate powerful themes of restoration into our endings without sounding preachy or cliche’.

For me, maybe you as well, the painful truth of stroytelling is finding the right ending or a suitable ending.

Condider the Fake-Out ending: the hero thinks he is done, or is chased (ex. by the shadow or devil figure back home, causing a road block). Our hero must confront the stories ultimate evil, whatever that my be for you, and face death in a deep and meaningful way. Through our heros strength, cleverness, loyalty, honesty, courage, or virtue (again, whichever you choose), your hero survives, experiencing some sort of paradigm or shifting resurrection.

Ending our story with this Resurrection may be very tempting, but if we think about it, this might not be enough for our readers.

There needs to be something else.

So let’s look at it this way: If we want our protagonist to come across as heroic, he/she must bring life and hope back into their community. Our protagonist serves the needs and wants of a simple character, not society as a whole.

Our hero is seperated from everyone else; his/her deeds have a multiplying effect. They expand beyond the protagonists’ existence and into the surrounding world we created, bringing hope, life, and purpose into our characters’ normal lives, where it once was lost.

Let’s talk about the Elixer. There are two kinds:

  1. Physical- life and food (ex. Hunger Games), rain to restore dead crops (ex. Ong Bak: The Thai Warrior), or friendship and a physical reunion (ex. Toy Story)
  2. Emotional or Spiritual- hope (ex. Star Wars: A New Hope), faith (ex. The Book of Exodus), or a renewed sense of marriage and family (ex. Back to the Future)

Stories such as these have a lasting impact on our readers because there is a sense that a wrong has been made right. Without dozens of drafts(Ugh!), these stories can be difficult to write. (I struggle as well!)

So how do we finish our story? Seeds of a perfect ending must be planted at the very beginning. The most important seed to plant: brokeness or injustice. Our hero exists to make right what is wrong. What is wrong in the world we created must be some form of brokeness or injustice.

As we write, we need to ask ourselves: What is wrong with my world? What is wrong with my neighbors world?

Consider: Has the problem existed in the past? Could it exist in the future? And…Could it exist in a completely different world or universe?

Every genre story ever written has a secret trick up its sleeve. It takes the injustice of our normal, everyday world, and transports them to different and fantastic times and places.

Practice will only make us better writers. Try asking yourself these questions using the prompt. I would love to read what you create. Let us read what you come up with in the comment section.

Thanks for supporting my blog and your fellow bloggers.

SECRETS

For some of us, there is nothing more inticing and sparks our interst or curiosity, than the idea that there are secret places or restricted areas.

Maybe I don’t pay enough attention, or it just didn’t peak my interest at the time, but I learned that Coca Cola’s secret recipe is more heavily guarded than some of the most prized jewels in the world. Coca Cola’s secret is housed inside the Coca Cola Vault, in the World of Coca Cola Museum.

Dulce Base, New Mexico, US Housing around 2600 people (mostly, Native Americans), is a small town, Dulce. It resides in New Mexico, close to the Colorado border. In the off-chance you haven’t heard of it, it is believed that this little town holds many strange secrets.

This small town is home to Dulce Base, an underground facility. Some say this is where weird experiments are done as well as the development of advanced biological technologies.

Philip Schneider (a former US government employee with high-level security clearance) is said to have take part in building a “Secret Underground Base” in 1979.

Why is this man important? CONTINUE READING…

Scheider alleged that he was suspicious of some standard engineering operations and noticed the presence of Green Beret and Special Forces Operatives.

According to Scheider, while he was drilling he came face to face with a 7ft, grey in color, slimy alien and he shot it dead.

For you Conspiracy Theorists out there, maybe there lies a connection between Area 51 and Dulce Base.

According to reports, enngineers stated that there was an underground battle that killed 60 people. This may sound crazy, but Schneider was said to have been an outspoken critic of the US government on their alien coverup. Crazy or not, Schneider faced an untimely death, “due to suicide”.

Is this coincidence or did Schneider actually see something?

It is believed that this gigantic subterranean facility houses all sorts of weird gene mixing and splicing tests, all the way to freikishly human-like alien hybrids.

This is considered one of USA’s most secret places.

I ask you, if you were to consider the areas in which all of the alien sighting reports happened, it’s not a far reach to think that Dulce, New Mexico is holding a secret.

Is it worth more investigating, I would say so!

Myths and Legends Debunked

Long considered to be an Urban Legend, there are tunnels that run under the Mexican City, Puebla. These systems of tunnels are believed to be 500 years old. Researchers have considered that these tunnels were used by soldiers and another theory is that they were used by clergy (also known as common folk).

It is said that these tunnels are so high that a person could easily ride on hoseback through them. They extend for more than 10km. Antiques and items such as: old play toys, marbles, kitchen accessories, guns, gunpowder and bullets have been found trapped within the mud. These tunnels end where the Cinco de Mayo battle happened.

Four seperate entrances were found filled with earth when the tunnels were discovered. It was believed that there was a network of monestaries that had congregated in secret alleys. This network ran from Santo Domingo, San Agustin, La Merced to San Javier.

Due to a rich history and impressive architectural styles, Pueblo was named a World Heritage Site in 1987. Tourist attractions have now been made available to explore these tunnels and look at some of the artifacts that have been found.

A once myth or urban legend no longer exists. The tunnels are very much real. I found this story interesting for the mere fact that if what the people of Puebla walk on now is 18th or 19th century, and below them holds treasures, what else is out there yet to be discovered?

Mexico City; A secret underground world?

It is said that mere meters under the capitol of Mexico, a series of temples, palaces and mysterious artefacts from ancient kingdoms are being unearthed. The Spanish had started building the Metropolitan Cathedral in 1573 above the sacred Aztec temples as a symbol of their conquest. A five year excavation unearthed Templo Mayor(Great Temle). This excavation came about after electrical workers discovered a giant monolith in 1978.

One of these such discoveries was the Temple of Tonatiuh, the god of the sun. He was the godly govenor that was referred to as “the erea of the fifth sun”, which is a period that is still unfolding, predicting to end in destruction by earthquake. Then there is the Piedra Chalchihuitl stone. It has a stylised glyph that says, “the place of the precious sacred.”

The renovation of a building in 2015 led to a discovery of EL Gran Tzompantli. This is a 35m-long skull rack that had wooden posts where skulls of sacrificed victims were displayed. In 2017, after two years of excavations, there were nearly 700 skulls unconvered. A number of sacrificial offerings were found, including that of the skeleton of a boy dressed as Huitzilopochtli, a war god.

Many of the historic buildings in the metropolis serve the same function as they did 700 years ago. For instance, there is a Spanish cathedral built on top of what was The Mexican temple. Then you have Mexico’s National Palace that stands above the ruins of the palace of Moctezuma II, which was the long-standing Mexican Emporer, killed during the early stages of the Spanish conquest.

The idea that these buildings were built on top of the same buildings that represent eachother is very symbolic.

My curiosity has been piqued and am on a journey of my own to bring to you discoveries of Real Truths or just mere Myths and Legends.
